Interstellar

Interstellar

This movie is bittersweet for me, in a few ways. For one, it is probably the number one movie I have been looking forward to since it was announced a few years ago, and even before then when it was just a rumor. The problem is, you only get to see a movie for the first time one time, and I'll never get that back.

I left the movie in a state of something resembling shock, and had very little of substance to say to anyone. If the mood of the theatre was any indication, all hushed tones and blank faces, most every else had the same experience. But as I made my way home, through the wonderfully empty and dark Northern Virginia roads at 2am, I realized something.

These are the stories I want to tell.

If there was ever a piece of media that I could point to and say "I want to tell that kind of story," it's Interstellar. It felt important (whether or not is was important can be debated and I don't really want to get into that here), it felt big, and most of all, it made me feel and it made me think. It wasn't just another piece of commercial action film, although it did have that stuff in it, it wasn't for that stuff. As I think about the most satisfying thing for me to hear after someone reads my stories would be that it made them think. I don't know that I've accomplished this yet, but it's something that I'm working toward. Honestly, it's more important to me than ever making a single dollar on something I write, that what I do write is meaningful and inspires others to something more than themselves.

I won't give an in depth review of the movie, because I think it really requires more dialogue and thought on my part. All I will say is: don't read reviews about the movie before seeing it, don't look it up on IMDB or Rotten Tomatoes. I promise you this movie is best when you bring a fresh mind into it, without too many expectations or "spoilers." There are too many moments that I just wasn't expecting to see going in, and they totally blew me away in execution and thoughtfulness. No, it's not for everyone, but only you can be the judge of if it's for you.

Also, see it in IMAX if you can.
