Castle Rock

We had family visiting this weekend, so I don't have anything smart and fun to share. You probably want something other than politics to think about at the moment, so enjoy some pictures from our hike up to Castle Rock.

NaNoWriMo 2016 Incoming

Have you ever wanted to write a book?

November is National Novel Writing Month, so it's the perfect time to do it! I think I write about this almost every year, because I think it's something fun and interesting. The idea of having written a novel, whether or not you ever do something with it, is something that I think a lot of people want to do. This event of writing 50,000 words in a month isn't just about writing fiction, it could be that memoir that you always wanted to write, or some non-fiction or inspirational book that you feel like you have inside you and never took the time to get it out.

It could be anything. The limit is your imagination.

Giving Up Control

Control is a dangerous illusion.

I'm not saying that everything is out of your hands and that nothing you do matters. It does matter. You do matter. The problem comes when you get it into your mind that everything is on your shoulders.

That if you don't go out there and make something happen then nothing will happen and everything will be terrible and never change and you'll just go on living the same life you always had in the same job doing the same things over and over until you retire or die or win the lottery or until you finally do that thing that you...

You get the picture.

King Arthur

Have I mentioned that I like Guy Ritchie films?

He definitely sneaked his way into the list of my favorite directors. I enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes movies, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, but at the time I wasn't really paying attention to who directed the movies. A lot of my more critical story-telling and dissecting faculties were criminally underdeveloped until probably only a few years ago (and I'm still working on them). It wasn't until recently that I started to really appreciate the work that he did in those films enough to get really excited about his upcoming projects.

Interplanetary Transport

It's no secret that I like science fiction. It accounts for almost all of the books and movies that I enjoy, and whenever something new comes out in that genre I'm likely to be interested in it. I can't put my finger fully on why that is, or what it is about science fiction that draws me in and holds me. Some combination of the sense of wonder, the technology, the ideas about what the future might look like, all make up this interesting topic that I so enjoy exploring time and time again.

And I grew up in an atmosphere that encouraged me to enjoy science fiction. My parents exposed me to The Last Starfighter which I loved, only to later find out that they were holding out on us and showed us Star Wars. We watched Star Trek as a family, we had a telescope to look at the moon and stars, I read Ender's Game and the Star Wars X-Wing books that I had the local library specifically buy for me. It would have been hard not to like this stuff.

So you can imagine my excitement when yesterday SpaceX announced their interplanetary transport system that could feasibly transport people to Mars.

Book Review: Extreme Makeover Apocalypse Edition

Hey there.

I've been away for a while, it's no secret. I'm well aware that this blog has been sitting dormant for over a year now, and it's entirely my fault. Life has been a bit crazy recently. Between moving across the country, buying a home, having a baby, dealing with new work situations, I haven't had as much time to write as I would like. The good news is that things are starting to settle down again, and I'm going to try to kickstart the blog once more, to try to gain some traction here.

The other piece of good news is that I have still been writing, it's just that none of it has seen the light of day. I have a couple projects in the works, and I'm really excited about them. I'm excited to share them here in the near future.

ut apart from all of that I wanted to start doing other things here as well. So, you might see a few new types of posts from me, the first of which being this one, a book review.
