Why I Wrote Into the Swarm

In case you missed it, last week I posted an audio clip of me reading the first chapter of my forthcoming novella. I still don't have a firm time-frame for when I want to get the novella out into the world, but I'm shooting for sometime in November. You can find that post here.

Today I wanted to talk a little bit about why I wrote this thing, and highlight some of the themes you're going to find in it. I also wanted to show off my (work-in-progress) description for the novella:

My Novella

I'm just putting the finishing touches on a novella that I wrote a few months back. I originally sent it off to see if there was any interest from magazines and the like, but no such luck. Unfortunately, I think it's a little long for a magazine and a little short for a book publisher, so I'm kinda stuck. So, instead of shelving it, I thought why not put it out there. Self publish. It's a growing thing, and it's easy enough to do, so why not me?

All that to say it's not ready yet.

But I've been doing something that I haven't done with any of my other work, namely reading it out loud as a final editing pass. Since I was sitting there and reading it, I figured why not turn on a microphone? I'm no voice actor, and I don't claim to have a great voice for reading, and there are errors. Also, it's definitely not a high quality product, but I thought it might be a fun glimpse behind the scenes into what I'm doing.

Castle Rock

We had family visiting this weekend, so I don't have anything smart and fun to share. You probably want something other than politics to think about at the moment, so enjoy some pictures from our hike up to Castle Rock.

NaNoWriMo 2016 Incoming

Have you ever wanted to write a book?

November is National Novel Writing Month, so it's the perfect time to do it! I think I write about this almost every year, because I think it's something fun and interesting. The idea of having written a novel, whether or not you ever do something with it, is something that I think a lot of people want to do. This event of writing 50,000 words in a month isn't just about writing fiction, it could be that memoir that you always wanted to write, or some non-fiction or inspirational book that you feel like you have inside you and never took the time to get it out.

It could be anything. The limit is your imagination.

Interplanetary Transport

It's no secret that I like science fiction. It accounts for almost all of the books and movies that I enjoy, and whenever something new comes out in that genre I'm likely to be interested in it. I can't put my finger fully on why that is, or what it is about science fiction that draws me in and holds me. Some combination of the sense of wonder, the technology, the ideas about what the future might look like, all make up this interesting topic that I so enjoy exploring time and time again.

And I grew up in an atmosphere that encouraged me to enjoy science fiction. My parents exposed me to The Last Starfighter which I loved, only to later find out that they were holding out on us and showed us Star Wars. We watched Star Trek as a family, we had a telescope to look at the moon and stars, I read Ender's Game and the Star Wars X-Wing books that I had the local library specifically buy for me. It would have been hard not to like this stuff.

So you can imagine my excitement when yesterday SpaceX announced their interplanetary transport system that could feasibly transport people to Mars.

Book Review: Extreme Makeover Apocalypse Edition

Hey there.

I've been away for a while, it's no secret. I'm well aware that this blog has been sitting dormant for over a year now, and it's entirely my fault. Life has been a bit crazy recently. Between moving across the country, buying a home, having a baby, dealing with new work situations, I haven't had as much time to write as I would like. The good news is that things are starting to settle down again, and I'm going to try to kickstart the blog once more, to try to gain some traction here.

The other piece of good news is that I have still been writing, it's just that none of it has seen the light of day. I have a couple projects in the works, and I'm really excited about them. I'm excited to share them here in the near future.

ut apart from all of that I wanted to start doing other things here as well. So, you might see a few new types of posts from me, the first of which being this one, a book review.
